The Whitby sea glass is not on the West Cliff sands. It is at Tate Hill Sands, the small harbour-side beach below the 199 Steps. Amy Kelly of Whitby Seaglass, who has collected here for years, does most of her hunting on the walk between Whitby and Sandsend: "I've found whites, greens of all shades, yellows, oranges, blues and red, but the rarest I have found are lilac and pink." Work the pebbly sections, not the sand. Park at Church Street (YO22 4AS) and walk through the old town: the West Cliff lift has been closed since 2021.
